Filipino Hero: Dr. Jose P. Rizal

Born: June 19, 161 in Calamba, Laguna
Died: December 30, 1896
The Philippine National Hero
His name “Rizal” was derived from the word “of rice” or “of green field.” This name was chosen by his father in compliance with the 1894 decree regarding surnames. While on exile in Dapitan, he established a clinic, a school, a gymnasium and improved the water and light system of the town. Wrote “El Filibusterismo” and “Noli Me Tangere.”
